How to Plan an Officer Retreat

An officer retreat is like an officer meeting, but it's only to plan and discuss the upcoming year or semester. The officer retreat should be done by the president and/or the vice president.

1. Schedule an officer retreat when at least 2/3rds of officers can meet.
Time: Normally, officer retreats should be more than one hour. Officers need time to create a calendar for the year and plan half of the year's meetings and events.
Place: Any place that allows everyone to hear each other without any problems. Someone's house, a study room, or a quiet cafe can work. Some clubs go to amusement parks, hotels, ski resorts, and corporation campuses to get away from their usual locations.

2. Bring food (if it's not at a cafe or food joint), paper, and pens/pencils.

3. Make an itinerary or schedule of the officer retreat. What events and meetings will be planned at the retreat? Who will do what for this event? When will be that event? Write it out and talk about it at the retreat.

4. If you want to make the retreat more fun, start off with an ice breaker or activity that gets everyone warmed up to each other. Also, eating together helps bring together groups of people.

5. Make time for all of the officers to contribute ideas. Sometimes, this can be done in an activity.

6. If you haven't already, get all of your officers' contact information (email, phone, etc.) before they leave. If there are any unsigned documents or information you need from any officer, this is a good time to get it as well.
